Matthew H. Herynk, Ph.D
Founding Director, YoungCancerSpouses

When we first started our personal battle with cancer, I poured my energies into learning all I could about my wife's particular cancer and being the best caregiver possible. We were fortunate to have very supportive families who were able to step in and help out on a daily basis. We looked into support groups, but found that they were filled with people 30 years older than us who were not dealing with the same issues. There was a severe lack of support for spouses of young cancer patients. I needed people who were dealing with the same issues I was: kids, work, mortgage, no vacation time, minimal understanding of the healthcare and insurance system, and a lack of end of life planning. While talking with others, I soon found that spouses are the part of a cancer journey that no one wants to talk about or deal with. It was clear that many more young cancer spouses needed to be reached. Karen, Greg and I have worked together to make that goal a reality.

I currently live in Houston, Texas with my two children. Sadly, my beautiful wife of eleven years passed away on October 6th of 2007. Ironically, God has placed me in the middle of the Texas Medical Center, the world's largest medical center, where I have spent the last several years researching cures for cancer.
